The Korean Turtle Ship, or Geobukseon, was a legendary warship used by Admiral Yi Sun-sin during the late 16th century to defend Korea against invading fleets. Famous for its armored deck, fearsome dragon head, and innovative design, it is considered one of the world’s first ironclad vessels.

Our handcrafted Korean Turtle Ship model faithfully recreates this historic icon with exceptional craftsmanship. Built from Western Red Cedar, each piece is shaped and assembled using the traditional plank-on-frame method to form a smooth and durable hull. The model features a finely carved dragon head at the bow, defensive spikes along the upper deck, dual masts with accurately hand-rigged sails, and rows of oars that highlight the ship’s powerful maneuvering capability. History:

The Turtle Ship, known in Korean as Geobukseon, is one of the most iconic warships in East Asian naval history. It was developed during the late 16th century under the command of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the national hero who led Korea’s naval forces during the Imjin War against invading Japanese fleets (1592–1598). Although earlier versions of the Turtle Ship may have existed, Admiral Yi redesigned and perfected the vessel, transforming it into a groundbreaking naval weapon.

The ship was famous for its armored, spiked roof, which prevented enemy soldiers from boarding—a common tactic in naval warfare at the time. Its dragon-shaped bow served both symbolic and practical purposes: it boosted morale and, according to historical records, could emit smoke to obscure visibility and confuse enemy ships. Equipped with multiple cannons, rows of fast-moving oars, and a sturdy wooden hull, the Turtle Ship was engineered for close combat, ramming, and rapid maneuverability.

The innovative design gave Admiral Yi a decisive strategic advantage, contributing to several major Korean victories, including the Battle of Sacheon and the famous Battle of Myeongnyang. Today, the Turtle Ship is celebrated as a symbol of Korean ingenuity, resilience, and military brilliance.
